I've spent quite a lot of time thinking about what constitutes 'satisfaction' when I read the last page. Sometimes it's enough that we have clues about what the future holds for the characters, sometimes it's a piece of information which recasts the story I've just read adding a layer of complexity, but that can be very hard to achieve as it mustn't feel like a cheat. One novel where I think the last minute 'reveal' works because it adds the final piece that makes the picture clear is in 'Midwives' by Chris Bohjalian.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5156023462376747109.post-73834177863795155492013-06-13T19:30:50.294+01:002013-06-13T19:30:50.294+01:00What a lovely giveaway!

The ending is a delightful, unexpected and moving twist. Mother, who is elderly, gets separated from her family in Seoul. Here begins a desperate search to find her...as the book progresses, we hear from each family member their thoughts about Mother and what she meant to them...The ending, although not wonderful, did give me much to ponder over and gets to the heart of how well do we really know anybody...Ann Bradleyhttps://twitter.com/Yorvikannie59noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5156023462376747109.post-59758739724754469062013-06-11T17:39:22.834+01:002013-06-11T17:39:22.834+01:00Great review, Louise. It was so ambiguous and I thought about it for days afterwards. Wavering between the different scenarios I thought had happened. I read so much that books don't often stay in my head very long so this really stuck in my mind. Love the pic of you reading too - obviously having 5 kids is not as much work as I imagined it to be ;-)Amanda Sainthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00048199293487068879noreply@blogger.com
